Understanding how men and women view relationships has stumped people for centuries. Who is right? Who is wrong? Are we even asking the right questions? Stereotypes you may have of others can really stint your dating and relationship goals. Because let’s face it – all relationships require some amount of effort on your part. Essentially, there are 3 reasons why you should go beyond stereotypes to make your relationship work.

Men and Women Socialize Differently

When it comes to meeting new people, who should start talking first? On one hand, some women still believe men should approach them first when it comes to dating. These are the women who will keep an eye on a guy they like, but won’t take the first step in a social setting. Rather, they wait for the men to introduce themselves. But sometimes, they could be waiting for a long time. Unless they are approached by the yin to their yang – assertive men. These decisive men know what they want and how to get it. An old-school woman would pair well with a man that takes the initiative.

On the other hand, some women actually want to be the initiator in the relationship. Women of this nature will see a man they like and strike up a conversation just like that! They aren’t waiting around for men to make the first move. Many online dating sites, like Dream Singles, have female members who know what they want. They aren’t afraid to message men that feed their curiosity. And why should they? We are in a special time in history where men and women can chase after what they want, equally.

Is a Passive Man Unattractive?

From the men’s perspective, certain men are a bit more passive when it comes to relationships. These types of men aren’t comfortable socializing with people they don’t know. So what do you think would happen if they were in a room (even virtually) with beautiful women? One thing they aren’t going to do is initiate that social interaction. The perfect woman for this kind of man is one that won’t judge him for his passive nature. Women who are more go-getters typically do well with men who exhibit this behavior. They balance each other out and respect their differences. Balance and respect are two of the many pillars that make up a healthy relationship.

The bottom line is this: if you are judgmental towards your partner in your relationship, it won’t survive the many trials you both have to face together. Respect the socializing nature of your partner and find someone who will respect yours in return.

Men and Women Take Different Things from Conversations

How many conversations in a relationship go south just because of miscommunication? Maybe your partner didn’t take what you said the way you intended it to be received. Perhaps you misunderstood a point your partner was trying to make. Without a doubt, men and women take away different things from conversations. Men often have stereotypes associated that deem them insensitive and incapable of discussing their emotions.

Moreover, women are stereotyped incessantly of being too emotional. But what if you go beyond these standard stereotypes? Hanging an expectation over your partner’s head doesn’t mean they will live up to it. Some men will surprise you with how comfortable they are discussing their feelings. Similarly, some women are shockingly pragmatic and don’t let emotions run their lives.

The bottom line is this: everyone is different. When you meet someone new, try to get to know them without hanging your expectations overhead.

Men and Women: Do Actions Speak Louder Than Words for Both Genders?

When it comes to actions in a relationship, not everyone can appreciate it. Some men and women would rather be touched or given a special present. Think we’re wrong? Let’s hear what the expert has to say. Gary Chapman, New York Times best seller, wrote a book entitled The 5 Love Languages in 1992. Although this book is older, the wisdom you’ll find inside is timeless. These five love languages will help you understand how you and your partner prefer to receive love. Just because you like actions doesn’t mean your partner feels the same way. The five love languages are physical touch, acts of service, receiving gifts, words of affirmation and quality time. The more you understand about what your partner needs to feel loved, the better you can meet their needs.

All in all, you should fight for your relationship if you feel it is worth saving. At minimum, you now know 3 reasons why you should go beyond stereotypes to make your relationship work. Remember, respect your partner’s socializing style and avoid overhanging expectations. Relationships can be complicated, but some of them can be strengthened through the obstacles.

  1. i am BOTH. I was shy but before i entered the U.S.A.F. and learned to go TDY I was slow to meet people. After leaving active duty and after my first year of U. of Texas at Arlington if I meet someone outgoing I talk and reply but to a lesser extent than if the person(woman) I like is being shy but not pushing me away or being silent only shy but talkative. So I respond to the woman. If I can talk to her now I kneel and kiss her dress/hand/glove to show her my respect and true love from my heart to be acknowledged. lauran andrew bahr

  2. Since the earliest, with my first girlfried, being a little African American girl in the first grade, and later, being followed by my first causan girlfriend, whom I just knew that I was going to marry after my 18 th birthday. But sadly, that was not to be. Anyways, it has always been the dear women in my life, who had always picked me. And had not been for their determination and courage in chasing me, I would no doubt have still been a virgin at almost 60 years old, and that’s the sad truth. But then, what has worked for me over the years, may not work for the next young man. But for me, I have always trusted the judgement of the fairer sex, because they already know what they want, and when they want it, and all the begging in the world, is not going to make a young lady love, or even like you, once they made up their mind, that they don’t. And once we as men, realize that one undeniable fact, you will find that your luck with women will definetly improve, I know it did for me.
